Today we headed into Kuala Lumpur, to the Rasjid India district, otherwise known as Little India. This is a bazaar which contains stalls with Indian food, clothes and other paraphernalia, not for from the Bintang district, which is a popular section of KL with a lot of hotels.
We caught the LRT (Light Rail Transport) to get there, the three of us startingat the local station of Petaling Jaya to Masjid Jamek. Once there we were looking at the markets when Eunice told me to stay away (as she gets better discounts if they think she is a local, rather than me looking like a tourist). Unfortunately in this time, Leonard also went his seperate way, and we only saw glimpses of him after that.
With today being a Friday, it was the Muslim day of prayer, and with a Mosque being in the middle of the area, there was a lot of activity as the Muslims came to kneel facing East for their prayer. I'm not too sure on the complete reasons behind it, but I believe they kneel to face Mecca as their religious chants came over the loudspeakers in the area.
We watched the prayer for a while until we headed to a traditional Indian store, where Eunice bought some Punjabis' (traditional Indian garments). I was looking at some of the beautiful brass ornaments they were selling there, but remembering we have a weight limit when we head back. Brass is very heavy.
We moved on to some more local stores, where some of the silk shirts were discounted by 50% and above. I bought a couple as they worked out to be around $au5 each, a real bargain!
We went through a few stores, each leading to a different street, until Eunice couldn't recognize where she was. It's been at least 12 years since she has been in this part of KL, so the changes and unfamiliarity contributed to this as well. We stopped off for an Indian lunch, Beef Rendang, with Mutton, Dhal, and rice. With a glass of Teh Tarik each, the meal was around $au8.
We wandered through more shops looking for bargains, then headed to the Sentral Markets, a place we have been a number of times before. Eunice tracked down some CD's of local Malay music she has been seeking for a while, while I enjoyed the place we were visiting, although the weight in my back pack was getting heavier and heavier. After a drink and rest, we decided to catch a taxi back, however a lot were trying to get RM30 from us for the trip. Finally one driver gave in and said he would make the trip for RM20, almost as soon as we had decided to catch the LRT back and catch a taxi from there.
Arriving back at Lawrence and Babe's, we talked about where we had been and what we saw over dinner, drinking some chinese rice wine that Leonard had picked up during his travels.
Tomorrow Siew Ling and her family are coming over at around midday, so we will probably stay around the house while this happens, on Sunday we may go into the tourist area to see the bird park and butterfly park again, as we haven't been there for a couple of years.
