Yesterday we had arranged with the taxi driver to take us to the temples in the Archaelogical Park, and other sights around Siem Reap, but after breakfast, I took a quick walk around Siem Reap to see some of the place for myself.
After a short ride to the Angkor Archeological Park, we purchased tickets to see the temples - Eunice and I got a 3 day pass while the others purchased a single day ticket.
Shortly thereafter we were on our way to Angkor Wat, the first of the temples we were to visit today.
Angkor Wat is about 1.5km x 1.3km, surrounded by a moat, with the main interior complex being around 1km square. The temple interior is highly decorated by carvings of Aspara dancers and tributes to the Hindu gods and mythology, being built around the 12th centuryby King Suryavarman the Second. Walking down the main walkway is an awe-inspiring sight, and as you get nearer the temple gains in it's complexity from the initial view of the three towers, the symbol of Angkor Wat, and in some places, of Cambodia. The towers are about 65 metres high, and form the inner complex of the temple.
Eunice had bought some gifts in KL for the children in Cambodia, a selection of food and some pencils and colouring-in books, we gave a couple of sets to these children when we saw them.
Our Taxi driver took us to a resturant, the Tida Spean Neak Resturant; we'd asked him to take us to an authentic local resturant, but it seemed more like a tourist spot to me - there seemed to be more Chinese than locals.
From there we went to Bayon, another of the local ancient temples. The Bayon is well renouned for it's statues of faces, with 37 towers having four faces on each side.It was built around the 12th century and is currently undergoing extensive renovations.
Later we visited Ta Prohm, one of the temples to be covered in the fig and silk-cotton trees, possibly hundreds of years old, which intertwine with the building blocks of the temple to form an intricate type of art. A lot of jungle undergrowth is in certain parts of this temple, which add to the mystique.
After that, we took some aerial photos from a balloon that went about 200 metres into the air.
