heh - my first car I painted was a pink "Hello Kitty" car for my partner, in a (failed!) attempt at getting her interested in racing a slot car ...

Re: Mini SG+ for next meet
paint BEFORE cutting - reduces overspray.

good prep of body - wash with dish detergent, rinse well, dry thoroughly.

Use paint made for polycarbonate plastic (Lexan), the same stuff the Radio Control crowd use. Regular model paints chip off as they cant flex with the plastic.

Spray in light coats, otherwise the plastic can become a bit brittle.

Back bright colours with white, makes a noticeable difference.

Use some masking tape for areas to be a different colour, make sure the edge is well adhered. Can also use stuff like adhesive dots, auto pin striping etc for masking shapes. Remove masking when paint is touch dry.

Windows can be masked clear, but also look good if painted black on the exterior. Detail lights, bumpers etc on the exterior, a silver paint pen does wonders.

Recommend bright colours so you can SEE your car as it whizzes around, but you guys already know this

Cutting - easiest to cut wheel wells with Dremel type tool with sanding or grinding bit. Just plunge through and neaten up. Even if cutting with scissors, final trimming can be done with a rolled bit of sandpaper. The idea is to remove any small cuts/nicks, as this is where the plastic will tear or crack. Also gives a much nicer finish

Any other questions I'm happy to have a go at answering for ya!

This page has a few tips for painting, mostly in 1/24th, but also a couple of HO cars:

I get my paint pens from Bunnings, any Newsagents, K mart, etc should have them. Get the finest tip available for silver for fine detailing.
Most basic colours available, they work great for lane marking....

Re: Making Mini's
OK, next question - what is recommened for connecting the body to the 'base' part (that sits on the chassis)? I was going to use glue, but that might get a bit messy!!!

I use superglue

Geoff prefers double sided tape.

Re: Mini SG+ for next meet
I had problems sticking Dave's clips to the paint so ...

First I was using sticky velcro to join the body directly to the chassis. No body clips needed but I found the velcro clings better than the adhesive. Too hard to get the body on and off.

I then went to using double sided tape with Dave's clips with the standard Tomy body clip. Works well.

Now I am trying Nod's idea of using velcro to stick on Dave's clips. You can get the body on and off using the clip but it also allows you to adjust the position of the body if you don't get it right first time. Might be a winner.
