Controller Plugs + Sockets
I'm not sure anyone else is having the same issuse i seem to have with these but...
I dont like the 1/4" stereo plugs! And it sure showed how crap they can be here the other night !

I'm going to seriously look into going down the XLR path, Chad stayed back after everyone left and we changed 2 lanes to XLR connectors and hey presto ! no issues !

Does anyone else feel the same way i do about 1/4" jacks ??

The parts i'll be using are :
Sockets : http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=item&id=P0903
and Plugs : http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=item&id=P0912
How ever i'll probably go for a plastic plug, we use them heaps at work and have no problems with them.

If anyone wants pricing let me know ! I'll probably make up some adapters, you can also buy them too !

Re: Controller Plugs + Sockets
These are another option !

http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=item&id=P0792

but a little pricy ! but the best connectors for high current !!

hmm, actually i could run all 3...
As it is i will probably use XLR and 1/4" sockets...

Re: Controller Plugs + Sockets
if I was going to change, I'd look into the 3 pin lighting sockets as used at alot of commercial raceways (very sim to 240V mains, but with one round pin)

a bit bulky, but would be pretty reliable.

What Dave describes in his post is very true. Added advantage is that Chad would have one less thing to change on his replica Terminator arm...

Re: Controller Plugs + Sockets
i dont like the idea of the mains plug !
If someone is stupid enough they can plug it into the mains !

I'd say the quality of the plugs is much greater with the XLR/Speakon vs Mains plugs ! much more compact too !

Re: Controller Plugs + Sockets
not 3 pin mains lol..

these have 2 flat pins, and one round one so won't fit in a mains socket

Re: Controller Plugs + Sockets
They fit into a whole range of mains sockets !
Thats what they are made for
Mostly used for lighting, but are being phased out by the standard 3 pin plug.

Re: Controller Plugs + Sockets
I was kinda the same as Cam - saw some of the controllers using the 240v type plugs and thought "whoa! hope someone doesn't plug a mains voltage thing in there!!" but then I thought to damage the track, plugging in something like a light will be expecting 240v, but it'll just get nothing (or about 24v DC); however if someone is silly enough to plug a controller with that type of plug into a mains socket ... I think there's a contender for the Darwin Awards!!!

Re: Controller Plugs + Sockets
Guys, the XLR plugs seemed really good. I would prefer them over the 3.5mm pins we use and even the extension plug sockets used. They would allow more current transfer than the 3.5's (something to think about if we are looking at a restricted open class) and i don't believe they would wear out like the extension plugs at commercial raceways can. The 1/24th commercial raceways in the Eastern states use the female type standard flat 3 pin extension sockets. I don't know if these have the same wearing problem but extension sockets allow even more transfer of current (you can wire bigger gauge cable in there, for 1/24's).

Bring on the change !!
I can supply conversion kits

Probably be about $25-30 for 4x XLR sockets and 4x XLR plugs

Re: Controller Plugs + Sockets
the controller is in series with the car, so what ever the car draws goes thru the controller !!

I've heard back from my supplier of the 1/4" sockets and they are going to replace them all, so with anyluck i'll have some that will work ! Despite this i will still use XLR's

So Power (W) = Volts (V) x Amps (I)? Does that sound correct?

The reason for asking is found an article on OldWeirdHerald:

http://www.oldweirdherald.com/scalestuff/onethreetwo/controller/controller.html

The article says a 10W resistor is heaps, but DSE only had 5W resistors, and I'm wondering if it will be adequate for the power sent through the controller ... ???
