WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
I'm thinking about using this as the basis for my track, available from Capral (34 Boulder St, Malaga).

The cost is quite cheap:

6.5m aluminium tubing: $20.77+GST
Plastic end cap: $1.69+GST
T connector (3 legs): $1.02+GST
Cross (4 legs): $1.09+GST
5 way connector: $1.20+GST
6 way connector: $1.30+GST

According the this Rail Roading site, it's a decent alternative to timber:

Any thoughts or considerations I might have missed???

Cheers

Richard

Re: WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
This isn't the track I was going to build, but seeing what Dave did on a 2400 x 1200 sheet, thought I'd get this going as a compromise between size and storage.

Design:

This changed a bit later, the bottom right inner corner is now a bit sharper (10 - 30cm radius, was 15 - 35cm) and then rejoins the track just before going under the bridge. The drivers colours are also renamed as Telephone wire has Black and Green in it ...

Underside, with the slots to be routed underneath for power and timing:

The start of marking the board:

Mostly on the board:

This is the corner I talked about earlier:

With this track, and the new trammel, I'm marking where the slots will go on their respective corners:

The plans for this trammel are elsewhere on this forum:

In action:

So the thing I've discovered about this trammel is that it's good for the bigger curves, but in tight most of the weight is over the other side of the router, so I think I'll buy a 40cm bolt (this one is 1.2m)

The weekend ran out pretty quick, so this week I need to make a bracket on the wall where it will live, and get a couple of odds and ends.

More next week

Richard

Re: WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
Just make sure the legs are about 1.2m tall

What do you plan on doing for the cross over section of your track ? Will it be a level crossing ?? that would be awesome !!!!!

A bridge would be cool too

Re: WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
In the initial drawing where the marks are beside the track is where the two rises will be, bridge will be 10mm perspex, with some perspex legs to hold it up. I've got a test piece of perspex here to trial.

The rises are also why I've planned the underside; these need to be avoided in the routing process.

Where it's written "Squeeze Corner" is where the rails will go in to a 25mm gap between each (normal is 40mm) and then come out to the sharpest corner on the track, right after the hairpin turnaround.

Direction on this drawing is R to L on the top straight (closest to Drivers stations).

Drivers stations will be a 100 x 600 mm area which will have the plugs, a place to rest controllers and cars. I'm toying with the idea to put a hinged lid on there so I can store stuff underneath (eg cars, controllers) when it's stored.

I've tried to make the two harder corners closer to where marshalls would stand.

When this is finished I'll buy a piece of 9mm 2400 x 1200 to put on top to keep the dust out. This sheet will probably become an el cheapo 1/32nd track

I'm really keen to see how the over/under bits turn out!

Oh yea - figured it was about as much track as I could get on 2400 x 1200

Yes, might make the draft piece out of wood as it's cheaper ...

All slot car things must come from Spain.

Let's see how it goes eh?

Re: WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
cool, i have the same idea about a "dust cover" (for plastic 1/32 and AFX tracks).
Will tty soon about the scalextric cars you have on ebay.

Yes, maybe a design like this (without the elevation changes) for the 1/32nd 'cover' track. This was by an Ausslot member called 'DangerMouse' - and that's my ringtone at the moment ...

Re: WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
More pics, rebuilt trammel with a shorter length of bolt(?) and this worked much better, along with the "roll-o-matic" addition. So today I finished routing the slots, gave some parts the liquid wood treatment and sanded down other bits. The sanding is the worst part. More sanding tomorrow

Cheers

Re: WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
Phono plug ?
do i need to bring along my turn table to the next meet ?
Move up to XLR connectors
But if you want to stick with the 6.35mm stuff i have some great sockets which are only about $1 each. They are what i'm using on my track, good for pannel mount only.

As for sanding I've got a belt sander if you want to have a go with that, it makes light work of lots of sanding
Other wise there is a standard 1/3 sheet orbital and 80mm random orbital here too

Got my 6.35mm phono plugs, still missing the DPDT switch, tho' - they're listed at Jaycar and Altronics, unless you've got some??

Came out of the slot budget, so it's the cheap stuff. But it's not too bad, at least it's not XXXX

Re: WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
The sanding of the slots is complete ... next is getting the rails slots routed, which should be next weekend.

Re: WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
Tonight I had a quick go at testing the routing of Perspex; it worked out quite well, with the router on a lower speed
