Nice plan.

Somewhere though between 17th May to 31st May, you may need help.

Re: WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
If anyone wants to help, they are welcome to come over, hopefully they can see me make an error before I actually do it

Just give me a buzz and see if I'm doing anything ...

Anyway, today had good and bad points. Tested the router width and depth for rails, which looked ok:

Tested a few cars:

And routed the rail slots:

Unfortunately, the jig caught one of the flat heads that was holding it in place, and gouges the perspex base:

which caused this error on the board:

At first it didn't look too bad, so I carried on, however it seems that the conflict with the perspex pulled the routed bit down enough that the rails slots were now lower than the rails, so getting power to the car on these four rails would be impossible. i made the decision to flip over the board and start again, as there were a couple of other aspects I wasn't happy with, including the lane spacing. So I redrew the track on the other side, tightened the down ramp internal corner, and made a few other changes:

Then redrew my spacing jig to 40mm for each lane space, and 40 mm each side. Originally this was 50mm between lanes and 25mm each side.

Having had enough of routing, I drew up these drivers stations and transferred the design to the track:

That's enough for today ...

Cheers

Richard

No work tomorrow as we have some movie passes (and I've been ignoring Eunice too much of late ...) but I hope to get a bit more done on Sunday.

Cheers

Oh yea ...

I think that building the test track has givcen me the confidence to know that everything can be fixed - but I've also found that each track has it's own set of problems, for instance when routing the smaller (900 x 1200) track, using a piece of scrap wood was ok to make the straights, however when I'm making this bigger track, I puchased a piece of angle iron, but it flexes enough that ends don't match. So I found a larger piece of scrap wood that doesn't flex, backed with a few 'flat sheets' to add strength to the back of the straight

BTW: one thing I didn't post was that the perspex, while working good on the old router, seemed to get messed up when working on the smaller router. It seems the speed of the bit is too much, and 'melts' the perspex back in place.

At this point in time, I might forego the perspex bridge and go with an MDF one as I'd need to make a new jig for the bigger router to cut rails and I already feel like I'm running out of time ...

Cheers

Richard

Cool didnt know this stuff existed !
What colour is it going to end up being ? Going to do something silly for lane marking? or just go with the locking wire ?

Re: WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
mdf primer/sealer is a must, especially for enamel paints, otherwise it soaks up paint like a sponge

Yep, I saw it a while ago at Bunnings - got some Grey for the track and Blue and Green for the borders and infield respectively.

Re: WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
Phew, worked hard today, but I didn't get as much as I'd hoped to get done. Eunice has a craft fair tomorrow, so I might be able to get a few hours in to finish off where I should be in my schedule.

Drilled and routed reed holes:

And added locations for power taps - thinking about using the copper tape to avoid soldering the stitching wire, might be time to experiement with that:

Then sorted out where the power will get plugged in (this is a low voltage power inlet, for 5-30V)

Drilled and chopped drivers station locations:

While the drivers station 'jiffy boxes' were painted and dried:

Routed the underside (pretty roughly!):

Marked out where the bridge has to go:

Then cut and temporarily supported it:

About this time we went to Bunning, so I picked up these foldable trestle table legs, for fitting later:

Cheers

Richard

Re: WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
Exciting times ahead for all.

Hope the perspex bridge works out eventually. But sounds like it would need to be worked a little bit, cool off, work another bit, cool off etc. It's a fine line with that material.

Re: WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
busy man!

if you reverse the bridge, it would give you a continuous smooth run over the elevation change - but no cool perspex option..

Re: WA Routed - Marathon Raceway
Got a bit more done today, after dropping Eunice at the craft fair and coming back.

The bridge rises are now screwed in place, both on top and underneath, and about a thousand screws are holding it together:

After filling a few holes, I went back to the craft fair and hung around for a few hours.

When we got back, I sanded, vacuumed, sanded, vacuumed and vacuumed again then lay down the MDF primer.

A few small problems with paint in the slots, but removed it as I painted. The primer chews through foam brushes though - it went through three rollers and one cutter (you'll notice the area around the drivers stations, the last part I did, is pretty rough around the edges!!)

@Dave - yes, putting the bridge as an underpass is an option I've seen on other tracks, but the physical area to get your hand under (in the case of a deslot) is larger, which may not be so practical.

@Chad - thanks, you probably know by now I like taking photos

I forgot to mention yesterday that Cam dropped around a few odds and ends, so the drivers stations will have the XLR connectors (thanks Cam!!) - I have to redesign the divers stations at some stage to add them into the mix.

But not tonight - time for a beer

Cheers

Richard
