No,

The circuit can be adapted by replacing the sensor with the (already existing) reed switch; the part I am interested in is the pulse extender and comparator circuits.

Richard, what probs are you having with the sensors?

I'm assuming Geoff would have sorted any software related issues..

The hardware page of Ultimate Racer has circuits for both optical and dead strips. To my uneducated eye they look about the same as what you have. I was planning to use the dead strip circuit.

Yep, the two circuits are pretty similar; the first one has the added bonus of an LED that turns on as a car is detected.
